Foamtastic

German artist Katja Windau created a wall installation using foam offcuts from furniture production. The pastel coloured pieces were arranged in a grid-like formation yet the varying colours and shapes make it perfectly irregular.

When the project was finished she took detailed photos of the installation and then manipulated the images creating two dimensional, beautifully coloured and composed artworks. Her work was essentially given two lives. Three if you count the fact that the materials she was using were recycled!

This is so well aligned with the patterns I have created using everyday objects. Another example of seeing potential in seemingly mundane objects and materials.

Eggo Stool

German Designer Sebastian Aumer has designed a stool made from discarded eggshells.

He binds the eggshell 'pulp' with casein, vinegar and starch. He colours, then cooks the seat in an oven at high temperature. The other components being the legs are made from wood making the structure completely decomposable.

Eggo Stool Final Product

A really successful re-use of waste. The final design looks solid and steady opposed to the fragility of the eggshells that it's composed from. Wonderful choice of colours I must say.

Your stuff in a carpet.

The geniuses at Carpet of Life have been inspired by the traditional weaving craft from Morocco called Boucherouite or Boucherwi. These rugs can be made of almost anything so now you can turn your outdated wardrobe into an original, colourful work of art.

The process is simple...cut (It's only a little bit and is explained on the website) and send a bag of your old rags to the address supplied. The women from six different villages in Morocco will conduct the transformation. You can follow your carpet's journey but essentially the look of the finished product is up to them.

Such a wonderful idea that builds pride amongst these Moroccan communities and keeps this craft alive.

Polly Popper

POLLY POPPER is a design created from a 50/50 split between existing products POLLY (Dale Hardiman) & POPPER (Andre Hnatojko). The marriage of these two production techniques has resulted in the most perfect blob of colour. Hurrah for collaboration.

Furniture by Glimpt

Swedish design studio Glimpt are all about craftsmen and artisan spotting across the globe. They trot around and learn about the way the local creatives do things. After spending some time with weavers in Vietnam they realised they could scale up the dimensions of the rolls and collaborate. This is the result...
